<image:title>Blog - What we’ve been reading - Rebekah’s pick: Extraordinary Insects: Weird. Wonderful. Indispensable. The ones who run our world. by Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson</image:title>
<image:caption>Back in February, Emily and I were lucky enough to attend TEDxManchester, hosted by DJRFF trustee Herb Kim. It was a brilliant day with fascinating talks from a diverse range of speakers. One of our favourite presentations was from “insect evangelist” Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson, who spoke passionately about the vital importance of insects in human survival. When she mentioned that she had written a book on the same topic, we knew we had to have a copy. Extraordinary Insects is a Sunday Times bestseller, and with good reason. Written in engaging and accessible language, and with each chapter broken down into bite-sized tidbits, I can certainly see why this book has appealed to such a wide audience. Sverdrup-Thygeson succeeds in taking a topic about which many of us have given little thought since school science lessons, and livens it up immeasurably. The author’s passion and excitement for her subject is clear on every page, to the extent that as a reader, you can’t help but be swept up by it. From the midge that pollinates cacao flowers and without whom we wouldn’t have chocolate, to dung beetles using the Milky Way as a navigation system, this book left me in awe of, as well as wholeheartedly rooting for, the inhabitants of the insect world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What we’ve been reading - Emily’s pick: You Look Like A Thing And I Love You by Janelle Shane</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve long been a fan of computer scientist and AI researcher Janelle Shane. Back in 2017, I stumbled upon Shane’s brilliant blog, AI Weirdness, and became immediately fascinated by machine learning generally, and machine learning *gone wrong* in particular. It quickly became one of my most frequently visited websites, and when Shane announced last year that she had written an AI Weirdness book, it immediately went straight to the top of my “to read” list. Named after a neural net-generated pickup line, the book retains the same brilliantly off-the-wall humour and sense of fun as the blog. From recipes and knock-knock jokes to Disney songs and Harry Potter fan fiction, the results of Shane’s experiments with machine-generated content coupled with her hilarious commentary had me crying with laughter and quickly filing this in my “too funny for public transport” pile. Alongside this, though, the book also provides one of the clearest and most helpful explanations of artificial intelligence that I’ve come across. Using accessible real-world examples, Shane explains how AI works, where we can see it, and how we can expect it to develop in the future. In a world in which this topic is frequently sensationalised, Shane’s down-to-earth approach is refreshing and makes for enlightening and entertaining reading. Thoroughly recommended.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - World Children’s Day - 1. Extraordinary outdoor experiences</image:title>
<image:caption>In seeking to improve children’s lives, one of our primary objectives is to make learning engaging, exciting and enjoyable- and we firmly believe that hands-on activities are key to this mission. With the help of our “Beehives for Schools” project, schools have been able to create outdoor classroom environments centred around real apiaries. Suited and booted in full protective clothing, pupils get stuck into practical beekeeping tasks including colony inspections, forage planting and honey extraction. As well as building unique skills and an understanding of wider environmental issues, the powerful impact of these activities can be seen particularly in children who might struggle with traditional schooling but truly thrive in these engaging outdoor environments.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - World Children’s Day - 3. Skills for the future</image:title>
<image:caption>We also want to ensure that young people are leaving education with the confidence that they have the necessary skills for their next steps: not only vocational and technical skills, but also the “soft” skills that are all too often overlooked. Through our membership of the Skills Builder Partnership, we support schools, teachers and young people to recognise and promote a core set of eight essential skills: Listening, Speaking, Problem Solving, Creativity, Staying Positive, Aiming High, Leadership and Teamwork. When exploring machine learning and AI in our “Get Creative with Data” lessons, for example, pupils exercise their problem solving skills to tackle some of the tough ethical questions surrounding these technologies. Over by the apiary, meanwhile, our budding beekeepers employ their teamwork skills to operate honey extraction equipment and harvest enough honey for everyone to have a taste.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Across the country, many thousands of young people are falling behind with their education because they cannot access the internet at home- an issue that has fallen into even sharper focus in light of the coronavirus pandemic. We have partnered with the Laptops for Kids campaign to help every child get the tools they need to fulfil their potential. Starting in Sheffield, the campaign is calling on organisations and individuals to donate their unused tech which will be distributed to families in need, making an immediate, tangible difference to their lives and the opportunities available to them. <image:caption>If you could pick up a new skill in an instant what would it be? I’d love to be able to use British Sign Language fluently. This year I've been using some of my spare time to work through an introduction to BSL course. It’s been so interesting but a real challenge to remember all of the signs quickly and correctly! Tell us about the best place you’ve ever visited? I think the best place I've ever visited has to be Höga Kusten (The High Coast) - the final destination of a Swedish road trip. The views were stunning, it felt a little bit like being in a postcard! What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? I enjoy walking and running and I’m a member of the Seven Hills WI, who have continued to meet virtually each month. I’ve also had a passion for music since I was young and this year have particularly enjoyed revisiting violin lessons (you’re never too old!) and joining some online choir sessions. What’s your favourite thing about living and working in Sheffield? It’s impossible to pick a favourite, but having the beautiful Peak District on the doorstep is definitely up there! Would you rather travel back in time to meet your ancestors, or forward in time to meet your descendants? I’d say back in time to meet my ancestors - it would be so fascinating to have a chat with my great-great-great grandma! If you’d like to find out more about what we do, please get in touch - we’d love to hear from you!</image:caption>

<image:caption>What was your first job? I had a Sunday paper round in my village, which earned me the princely sum of £3.50 a week. Can you speak any other languages? I can speak German- I studied it to A-level, then picked it up again when I met my now-husband, who is German, back in 2014. We actually spent a year living and working in Berlin, which quickly became my second-favourite city- after Sheffield, of course! Imagine that there are now 25 hours in a day! How do you spend your extra hour? Ooh, that’s a tricky one! I keep saying I want to read more, so I like to think I’d spend it curled up on the sofa with a good book. What Zoom activities have you been enjoying this year? I’ve been learning highland and clog dancing, which has been a fun challenge! Our wonderful yoga teacher who usually runs classes for us in the office has also moved her sessions online, which has been very much appreciated. And of course, like the majority of the population, I’ve done enough Zoom quizzes to last me a lifetime! Tis the season to be jolly! What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke? What do Alexander the Great and Winnie the Pooh have in common? The same middle name..</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five fascinating facts, part one: Computing - 1. Computing error? Check for real life “bugs”!</image:title>
<image:caption>The Harvard Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator was an early electromechanical computer. It was built and programmed by computing pioneers Howard Aiken and Grace Hopper. On September 9, 1947, a team of computer scientists and engineers working on the computer found that it was delivering consistent errors. When they investigated, they traced the problem back to an unexpected source: a moth trapped in the computer’s hardware! Clearly entertained by this discovery, they recorded it in their logbook as “first actual case of bug being found”, taping the moth alongside it as evidence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When they’re not busy creating some of the world’s most popular software packages, it seems that Microsoft’s developers keep themselves entertained by unleashing their creative sides. “Easter eggs”, or hidden features, were discovered in several old versions of Excel, including a 3D flight simulator in Excel 97, a racing action game in Excel 2000- and the creepily-titled “Hall of Souls” in Excel 95. Bad news if you were looking forward to uncovering some hidden gems in your next update though: Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Initiative put an end to the practice in the early ‘00s.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It might sound unlikely, but “nibble” really is a computing term. Also spelt nybble or nyble, this unit of information is equivalent to half a byte, or four bits. The term “crumb” has also been used to refer to a quarter byte, or two bits. Who knew data could make us so hungry?!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five fascinating facts, part one: Computing - 3. Forget ten - you can count up to 1023 on your fingers!</image:title>
<image:caption>Yes, really! Using binary numbers, it’s possible to count up to 31 on one hand- or 1023 using both. The trick is to assign each of your fingers a binary value: the thumb on your right hand becomes one, and each finger to the left of it gets double the value of the previous finger- so your right pointer finger is two, the right middle finger is four, the right ring finger is eight… and so on. To show the numbers in between these values, you just need to hold up the right combination of fingers- for example, right pointer finger (two) + left little finger (32) + left middle finger (128) = 162. Why not give it a go yourself?!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five fascinating facts, part two: Bees - 5. Honey bees beat their wings over 200 times per second!</image:title>
<image:caption>That’s a lot of beats per second! Did you know that it’s the rapid beating of the wings which cause bees to buzz? Scientists used to think that bees had rigid wings - only able to move up and down - but after watching slow-motion video recordings of honey bees in action, they realised that they are able to rotate and twist their wings during flight. To do this, special muscles cause the thorax to squeeze both up and down and left to right. Image source: © Arizona Board of Regents / ASU Ask A Biologist. <image:title>Blog - Five fascinating facts, part two: Bees - 1. Worker bees can take on several different roles during their short lives - including cleaner, babysitter and undertaker!</image:title>
<image:caption>Worker bees are all female and are responsible for different tasks depending on their age. Young worker bees stay inside the hive to clean and polish the cells from which they have emerged. After a few days, they take on another important housekeeping role - undertakers! It’s important that any dead bees are removed before they threaten the health of the hive. Next, worker bees must feed and care for the developing larvae before it’s finally time for them to take flight and begin foraging for nectar, pollen and water. Phew….they certainly are busy bees!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five fascinating facts, part two: Bees - 2. When older honey bees take on tasks usually handled by younger bees, the aging of their brains is effectively reversed!</image:title>
<image:caption>Researchers at Arizona State University and Norwegian University of Life Sciences have discovered that older bees who take on tasks inside the hive (usually carried out by younger bees), experience a rejuvenation of their brain. During their research, scientists noted a change in the proteins in the bees’ brains and an ability to re-learn how to complete certain tasks. A very exciting discovery for those researching treatment against dementia. This article is thoroughly recommended for finding out more!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five fascinating facts, part two: Bees - 3. Honeybees use movement known as a ‘waggle dance’ to direct their nestmates towards the best source of food!</image:title>
<image:caption>Ethologist Karl Ritter von Frisch was the first person to decode the ‘waggle dance.’ When a honey bee discovers a good source of nectar or pollen, they return to the hive, desperate to share the good news and recruit others to help them to collect these important resources. The direction and duration of the figure-of-eight movements give the other bees information about the direction and distance to the flowers or sources of water. <image:caption>If humans were to take on this role instead it would cost us an average of £1.8 billion each year, and it certainly wouldn’t be an easy or a quick task! That’s why it’s so important that we look after our pollinators - so that they will carry on providing this essential, free service!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Clean, freely available water is something that many of us take for granted - but across the world, billions of people still lack this basic facility. In fact, worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water. To help tackle this crisis, innovators have developed IoT technology which is helping charities to improve the availability and quality of water in affected regions. By installing low-cost and long-lasting sensors in water pumps, aid charities can remotely monitor the water flow in any location, allowing them to detect any issues earlier and to quickly deploy teams to restore this essential lifeline.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s not just humans benefiting from the Internet of Things: this technology has also played a crucial role in saving endangered species. In Spain, the Iberian Lynx has been brought back from the brink of extinction thanks to the use of smart collars and connected drones, which allow scientists to study the animals’ behaviour and monitor their wellbeing from a distance. IoT has also been used to protect endangered Black Rhinos in Tanzania, where conservationists have implanted specially designed trackers into the animals’ horns. These transmit round-the-clock data about the rhinos’ whereabouts, helping park rangers to keep them safe from poachers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Innovating for the future with IoT - 1. Reducing air pollution</image:title>
<image:caption>Air pollution has become a hot topic in recent years, and for good reason: in the UK alone, outdoor air pollution is estimated to cause 40,000 premature deaths every single year. Luckily, IoT innovators are stepping up to help tackle this problem. To help us get a clearer picture of air pollution, a number of organisations have created low-cost IoT sensors which can measure and transmit air quality data. These have been attached to buildings, bicycles, and even pigeons to generate a highly detailed map of air pollution in different areas. Cities are even looking at how to join up IoT and artificial intelligence (AI) to create smart traffic lights which can collect real-time data on air pollution and change their signals to slow the flow of traffic into high pollution areas.</image:caption>
